RV Insurance in Ontario

An RV is a fantastic way of enjoying what Ontario has to offer. It can be used for camping, traveling or as a home away from home.

RVs include motorhomes and trailers. There are three main types of motorhomes: Class A, B and C. Each class is a different size and style. There are many types of trailers including fifth wheels, tent trailers, hybrids, toy haulers, truck campers and of course, the classic travel trailer.

It can be confusing to distinguish between these terms as they are sometimes interchangeable. Here’s a quick overview before we dive into RV insurance.

  • An RV is an umbrella term that refers to any motor vehicle or trailer with living space.
  • Motorhomes are motorized vehicles that provide a living space (equipped with a bedroom, kitchenette, and bathroom).
  • Camper vans are a small version of a motorhome, otherwise known as a class B motorhome.
  • Travel trailers are non-motorized and have a living area. They are hauled by another vehicle.
  • RV insurance is different between motorhomes and trailers, mostly due to the fact you are driving a motorhome whereas in a trailer you’ll have a separately insured tow vehicle.

Regardless of what trailer type you own, you probably already know that trailers in Ontario are expensive. Travel trailers in Ontario can cost more or less, depending on whether they’re used or new, but there’s more to it than the upfront costs. Consider how much it costs to register a trailer in Ontario, campsite fees, fuel, and more. It only makes sense to have the right insurance for your RV.

Now that you understand each type of RV, let’s look at some insurance questions relevant to your RV type.

Are All Types of RVs Required to Have Insurance?

Motorized RVs — Class A, B and C motorhomes — that can travel independently require their own insurance policy. This insurance policy must include mandatory auto insurance coverage.

Recreational trailers that are not motorized and are instead towed behind another car or any other vehicle do not require insurance, but it is a good idea to have coverage for them. For example, if you’re in an at-fault accident while towing or your trailer is damaged by a hailstorm, without RV insurance you won’t have coverage. Trailers can be added to some home insurance policies, or you can buy a separate RV insurance policy.

The Difference Between Car Insurance and RV Insurance

Just like car insurance, motorhomes or camper vans must have mandatory coverage. The mandatory coverage you need will depend on your location and the laws in your province, but it will always include third-party liability coverage. In this way, RV insurance for motorhomes or camper vans is the same as auto insurance. In Ontario, all registered vehicles must have the minimum mandatory coverage, per the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

The differences begin with optional coverages for RVs. Adding enhanced coverage to your policy can help protect your motorhome from any physical damage. There is also coverage available to cover your belongings in your motorhome, personal liability if you park it on a leased or owned lot, and more.

RV insurance is also different from car insurance as it covers both motorhomes and trailers – motorized and non-motorized.  While the actual coverage is different, RV insurance applies to both types.

What Does RV Insurance in Ontario Cover?

1. Mandatory Coverage

Third-Party Liability

This insurance covers you against bodily injury and property damage claims from third parties. Let’s suppose you run into a pedestrian while trying to park your RV in a busy campground. They’re hurt and they sue you. In such cases, third-party liability coverage may be available to help with legal costs and damages.

Accident Benefits

This coverage provides funds for your injuries, income replacement and funeral expenses.

Uninsured Motorist

This is also known as uninsured auto coverage. It protects you in case you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver or a driver who flees the scene. You can still get reimbursement from your RV coverage for any expenses beyond what is allowed by your policy.

Direct compensation for Property Damage (DCPD)

Property damage is covered by the Ontario no-fault insurance program. This means that you will only have to contact your auto insurance company after a motorhome accident, regardless of fault.

2. Optional Coverage

You can choose optional add-ons that will enhance your RV’s coverage beyond what is mandatory in Ontario. Here are some options to increase your peace of mind.

Collision Insurance

Also called upset insurance, this recommended coverage covers the cost of your RV’s repair or replacement if it is damaged in an accident with another vehicle.

Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays for the repair or replacement of your vehicle after it’s been lost or damaged due to a non-collision-related risk. This coverage can also include coverage for theft and vandalism, falling objects and severe weather.

Specified Perils Insurance

This is a less expensive alternative to comprehensive insurance. Your RV will be covered against only the risks specified in your policy.

All Perils Coverage

This package includes both comprehensive and collision insurance. A little more protection is possible as all risks are covered unless otherwise stated in your policy.

Contents Insurance

Much like a home insurance policy but for RVs, contents insurance protects you against damage or loss to your personal belongings.

3. Extra Endorsements

Family Protection

This endorsement is also known as OPCF 44R. This coverage supplies additional benefits if an at-fault driver does not have sufficient insurance to cover your injuries or your family members.

Loss of Use

The loss of use coverage is to cover the cost of temporary transportation while your RV is being repaired. This endorsement will ensure that you don’t have to cancel your road trip. Your RV policy can pay for a rental.

Emergency Roadside Assistance

You won’t have to go it alone if you need support for your recreational vehicle, including fuel delivery, towing, flat tire changing and battery boosting.

Vacation Expense

This coverage extends your loss of use and can pay for travel-related costs such as meals and lodging while your recreational vehicle is being repaired.

Full-Time and Camper Coverage

This coverage provides third-party liability protection in an equivalent way to your home insurance. Camper liability protects you from short-term vacations, while full-time liability is for RV owners.

How Is the Price of RV Insurance Calculated?

There are many factors that affect the average cost of RV insurance, meaning there may be significant differences in the average premium. Here are some of the factors that can affect your RV insurance quote.

Type of Recreational Vehicle

Your vehicle’s year, make, and model will all impact the price of your insurance.

Driving Record

Just like with auto insurance, your driving record matters when insuring a motorhome. Tickets and accidents will increase your RV insurance rates. Location

Where you live can affect your RV insurance rates as insurers look at your area’s record of claims (accidents and weather events). Where you plan to take your RV also matters. While most policies allow you to take your RV into the US, there is usually a time limit per year. Most policies also do not cover travel to Mexico. Double-check your policy to ensure that you are not overpaying for your coverage if you expand your travel area.

Value of Contents

RV insurance can cover your belongings stored in your RV. The value of these contents determines your rates.

History of Insurance

Insurers consider how long you’ve been insured, if you’ve made payments on time and the number of claims you’ve made when calculating your RV insurance rate.

How You Use Your RV

You’ll pay more to insure your motorhome the more you use it. If you are using your RV as your primary residence, expect to pay a higher rate than someone who uses their recreational vehicle for summer road trips.

Type of Coverage

The coverages you choose will impact your premium. The more coverage, the higher your premiums – but you’ll be covered for more scenarios.

Applicable Discounts

Ask about discounts to lower your insurance rates. Some insurers offer discounts if you have a home or auto policy with them; there are also discounts available for safety devices. Speak to our RV insurance brokers for details.
